Fairy Godmother Foundation of New York

So for my gala/halloween costume this year,
I decided to join the craze of
Crazy Rich Asians.

I did a DIY version of Rachel Chu’s Marchesa dress that she wore in the wedding scene.

It was easy to make.
And I was thinking that most people may not even notice it
since for sure not everyone watched the movie.

And I was correct!
Half of the people knew who I was dressed up as.
And half thought I was dressed up as a “princess”.

my carriage back as a pumpkin after 12 MN. lol

Funny enough,
when I got a prize for one of the best dressed,
the judge said,
“that princess in a blue dress”. lol
And he was in shock to learn that my name is Princess.
That was hilarious!

Anyways,
let’s get into the purpose of the gala.

The Fairy Godmother Foundation of New York, Inc.
was created in 2017 to honor the legacy of an extraordinary young woman,
Linda Shohatee (1997-2016).

Linda spent more than half of her life in hospitals.
Despite the obstacles she faced,
her story is one of strength and tenacity.
Linda saw herself as a “survivor,”
& was relentless in her determination to live life to its fullest.

I think Linda became my patient in 2011
& we never lost touch ever since.

Her birthday celebrations were large themed events,
her favorite being a spectacular “Sweet 15 Birthday” at Terrace on the Park.
And the annual gala has been held in the same venue so far.

Prom night is one of those memories we cherish & remember.
But for teenagers who have serious medical conditions,
they can’t make it to prom.
That was until New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital (CHONY)
began holding special prom nights for these children back in 2009.

Linda’s prom in June 2012

The theme was “An Evening Around The World”.
The hospital lobby was transformed into a red carpet & magical event that transported 100 sick children & their guests to exotic world locations.
It was a prom that these kids will never forget.
It was definitely the most memorable prom for me as well.

 She had several families:
her family of birth;
her health care families at Mount Sinai, Columbia’s CHONY, and St. Mary’s;
her school family at Marathon High School;
& the Capitulo Family who met Linda when she was two years old.
Ultimately Katie Capitulo, became Linda’s very own “Fairy Godmother.”

She came to my grad school graduation & we ate out after.
We share the love for food.

She really wanted to come to my wedding too.
But it was a destination wedding
& it was impossible given her condition.

The last time I saw her was on Nov. 2015
when I visited NY from London.

We would FaceTime despite the time difference with London.
We actually talked 2 weeks before she passed away.
I didn’t know that would be the last time.
I literally just moved back to NY.
It was so sad to come back to a funeral.
But, she has been a great part of my life & I will never forget every bit of it.

The foundation hopes to replicate some of the kindness Linda experienced
by granting manageable, meaningful experiences to enhance the quality of life
of children & young adults living with medical, physical, mental health, or developmental challenges.

She was in high school when I met her.
Now she has one more year of grad school for her MA in history
& is studying for her LSAT.
So proud of this lawyer in the making!
So inspiring!
