#Woke Wednesday: #MeAndSudan
Yesterday was the 1st day of spring,
but instead of a new beginning,
in the news was devastating:
Sudan,
the last male northern white rhino,
died Monday at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
He was once called by the dating app Tinder as the
“most eligible bachelor in the world”.
He was 45 years old.
My husband & I were so saddened about it.
We were lucky to have met Sudan & his family
during our trip to Kenya in 2016.

Looking through our photos & videos made me cry.
But I would like to write this blog post in honor of Sudan
& hopefully to create more awareness
to preserve not just rhinos but all the animals in the wild.
#MeAndSudan
I thought they were taking a picture of me. lol
But great moments w/ Sudan!

Sorry for the video quality!
Sudan & three other northern white rhinos (Najin, Fatu, Suni-deceased) - last of their kind:
were moved to Kenya from a zoo in the Czech Republic.
The move was prompted by the fact that
northern white rhinos had been declared extinct in the wild in 2009.
The subspecies had been reduced worldwide because of poachers
who target rhinos for their horns.
Workers at the conservancy watch the rhinos around the clock to protect them.
The northern white rhinos are enclosed in an electrical wire fence
& the security is armed with guns.
But the workers in the conservancy outside the northern white rhinos
only carry a stick!
Now there are only two northern whites left in the world:
1. his daughter, Najin
2. his granddaughter, Fatu
